COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager
DATE:June  6, 2018

SUBJECT:DISCUSSION REGARDING POTENTIAL PARTICIPATION IN THE 2020 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION.

RECOMMENDATION

The intent of this discussion is to inform the Mayor and City Commission of the current status of Miami Beach's potential participation, and to solicit any feedback and guidance.

ANALYSIS

The 2020 Democratic National Convention (DNC) is set to take place in mid-July, and the convention is currently accepting applications for Host Cities.

The major elements of the DNC activation include the actual convention (normally held in a "bowl" style arena); the state activities, special events and parties; the media center hosting more than 15,000 international media; and a very significant hotel inventory package.

The City of Miami Beach has not put forward an application to host the 2020 DNC. However, the City Manager and Administration have had exploratory discussions with the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) regarding the type of regional effort that would be required. It is anticipated that any application would require joint participation with Miami-Dade County as coordination with all municipalities for planning and hosting.

CONCLUSION

If the County were to take the lead, the City of Miami Beach might consider participation -- most notably by hosting events in the Miami Beach Convention Center.
