Since 2013, the City has taken several steps to increase parking spaces throughout the Biscayne Beach Neighborhood, following the completion of the Neighborhood Improvement Project. These included, re-striping, removal of bump-outs, relocation of fire hydrants and reduction of required length of parallel parking to 18 feet.

The City is exploring the following opportunities to further increase parking inventory in the neighborhood:

1) Parking lot at 81st Street and Hawthorne Avenue
Gain of 25 to 30 spaces at a cost of $580,000

2) One way conversion of 79th Street
Gain of 4 – 30 degree angle spaces at a cost of $17,500

3) One way conversion of Stillwater Drive South
Gain of 4 parallel spaces at a cost of $2,500

4) Parking around Crespi Park (at Crespi Blvd.)
Option 1 – Gain 19 spaces at a cost of $285,000
The possibility of modifying the current parking configuration on the east side of the park from parallel to 90 degree angle parking spaces. Performing this modification will require the removal of approximately six medium to large canopy trees and relocation of five additional small to medium trees. The parking spaces would encroach approximately 24 feet into the park (7,534 SF of green area), which will affect the fence and sidewalk. This modification will require relocation of one fire hydrant and one street light.

Option 2 – Gain 11 spaces at a cost of $300,000
The possibility of modifying the current parking configuration on the east side of the park from parallel to 45 degree angle parking spaces. Performing this modification will encroach approximately 11.5 feet into the park (4,295 SF of green area), affecting the sidewalk and fence. This modification will require relocation of one fire hydrant and one street light. At a potential cost of $300,000.

Option 3 – Gain 19 spaces at a cost of $90,000
The possibility of modifying the parking configuration on the open area, along the east side of the park, to convert five parallel parking spaces to 90 degree angle parking spaces. This modification will not require the removal of trees, but it will encroach 24 feet into the park (2,640 SF of green area), affecting the sidewalk and fence. This modification will require relocation of one fire hydrant and one street light.

The Administration has concerns regarding all options related to Crespi Park as all impact green space.

5) Bus Bay Repurposing – Gain 26 spaces at a cost of $100,000
Repurposing of 5 bus bays at the following locations, which have low traffic volumes, and buses can be served with a limited sidewalk extension:

Northbound Hawthorne Avenue adjacent to Crespi Park Gain 6 spaces
Northbound Hawthorne Avenue just north of 77 Street Gain 5 spaces
Northbound Hawthorne Avenue just north of 83 Street Gain 5 spaces
Southbound Hawthorne Avenue just north of 81 Street Gain 5 spaces
Eastbound 85 Street just west of Crespi Boulevard Gain 5 spaces
