ANALYSIS: At the March 1, 2017 City Commission meeting, dual referrals to the Finance and Citywide Projects Committee and to the Neighborhood/Community Affairs Committee (NCAC), to discuss placing cameras on every corner of the Mixed Use Entertainment District (MXE), the beachwalk, and installing emergency activation boxes along the beachwalk.
At the June 30, 2017 NCAC meeting, Lt. Steve Feldman of the Police Department’s Technical Services Unit stated that 17 cameras along Ocean Drive and Lummus Park had been recently upgraded to enhance coverage along the Ocean Drive corridor. He further stated the Department had conducted a cost estimate to expand cameras along the beachwalk, Collins Avenue and Washington Avenue, from 5th Street to 17th Street. The estimated price totaled $550,000 excluding the Public Works Department cost that would include the installation of the necessary distinct power outlets to the locations identified. The Committee made a motion to bring both cost estimates to the next NCAC meeting for discussion and further direction.
ANALYSIS
Public Works has compiled preliminary estimates from the City’s electrical contractor for the MXE camera project along Ocean Drive, Lummus Park, Collins Avenue and Washington Avenue from 5th Street to 17th Street (attached).
The estimate of $353,730 contemplates the wiring of dedicated circuits in order to separate cameras from street light circuits as well as the re-work of existing service points and the installation of a new service point on Washington Avenue adjacent to the Police Station.
