ANALYSIS

As Neil Sedaka wrote, "They say that breaking up is hard to do..." and he's right.

However, the indefatigable efforts of our colleagues City Manager Hudak, Chief of Police Wayne Jones, Fire Chief Virgil Fernandez, all of our law enforcement and public safety personnel, and the entire City team has resulted in successful (as of this writing) implementation and execution of this year’s comprehensive Spring Break strategy as set in motion by current and prior electeds. Collectively, these efforts made a difference for the benefit of our community, and the results are remarkable and deserving of the national recognition we have achieved, particularly as compared to the mayhem other cities throughout the State experienced this year.

Nonetheless, as I mentioned in a recent newsletter, no operational plan is perfect, and the best time to debrief and learn from our experience is right after it happened.

I understand and appreciate that my colleagues have created a placeholder for a discussion of the issues at the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee. However, given the critical importance of these issues to our overall public safety goals, and more fundamentally to the City’s brand as a beautiful, safe, and vibrant international resort destination, I believe this issue warrants the dedicated attention of the full City Commission for a robust, inclusive listening session that isn't time-constrained by multiple items on already full agendas in order to inform our ideas and decisions moving forward to 2025 and beyond.

This is why I reiterate my proposal, and urge my colleagues to join me in calling for, a Special City Commission meeting that would allow all of us – elected officials, senior staff, residents, business owners, even visitors - to hear what went right, what didn't, where we overdid it (if at all), what we didn't contemplate, and how we can build on our current success and improve our strategy for next year.

Let’s not wait until the Summer or Fall to dust off the 2024 plan. Rather, let’s keep our eye on the prize and address the comprehensive strategy for 2025 immediately, before we become too distracted by the press of so much other important business that comes before us.
