ANALYSIS

Miami Beach, with its dynamic urban environment, faces ongoing challenges in optimizing its available parking spaces. The landscape of transportation services has evolved with the advent of rideshare and app-based mobility solutions, resulting in changes to traditional taxicab usage. I believe our current allocation of parking spaces for taxicabs, particularly on-street parking spots, warrant reconsideration to enhance overall parking efficiency and accommodate changing mobility trends.

One such option is to explore the concept of flex spaces for parking, and the best locations for such flex spaces. Using a flexible approach for parking design will allow different users to park during different times of the day and week.

I would like for us to consider the impact of rideshare services on taxicab usage and its subsequent effect on the need for dedicated parking spaces. As part of this discussion item, I request for the Administration to please be prepared to evaluate the current demand for taxicab services, and assess the utilization of existing taxicab parking spaces on the streets of Miami Beach and the concept of “flexspaces” to allow for better utilization of parking spaces.
