COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:Commissioner Alex Fernandez
DATE:October  18, 2023

SUBJECT:REFERRAL TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS MBPD EFFORTS TO PATROL THE MID-BEACH AREA.

RECOMMENDATION

Please place on the October 18, 2023 agenda a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee to discuss the status of, and options to enhance, MBPD patrols in the Mid-Beach area.

Mid-Beach, which is a diverse neighborhood generally considered to be located between 24th and 60th Streets, is a captivating combination of everything there is to love about the cool of South Beach and the laid-back vibes of North Beach.  In addition to being home to many City residents, Mid-Beach also features upscale hotels, stylish restaurants and lounges, its own arts district and, of course, the beach which is a draw for residents and visitors alike.

However, Mid-Beach is not immune from persons committing quality of life and various other criminal offenses.  As such, the visible presence of police officers is important to deter and decrease criminal activity in the area.  Accordingly, I would request that the Police Department be prepared to discuss its Mid-Beach police patrol efforts including the feasibility of assigning designated officers specifically to patrol Collins Avenue and Indian Creek Drive in Mid-Beach.
