COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:Vice-Mayor Steven Meiner
DATE:February  22, 2023

SUBJECT:REFERRAL TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS OPTIONS FOR THE POTENTIAL RELOCATION OF THE BUS STOP CURRENTLY LOCATED ON THE WEST SIDE OF INDIAN CREEK DRIVE IMMEDIATELY NORTH OF 41ST STREET, IN ORDER TO URGE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY TO IMPLEMENT THE BEST AVAILABLE RELOCATION OPTION AND MITIGATE THE TRAFFIC CONGESTION RESULTING FROM FREQUENT STOPS AT THIS LOCATION THAT SIGNIFICANTLY IMPEDE THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC AT THE SOUTHBOUND RIGHT TURN LANE OF INDIAN CREEK DRIVE AND 41ST STREET.

ANALYSIS

Please place on the February 22, 2023 agenda a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee to discuss options for the potential relocation of the bus stop currently located on the west side of Indian Creek Drive immediately north of 41st Street (the “Bus Stop”). The goal of this referral is for the City Commission to identify available options and ultimately urge Miami-Dade County to relocate the Bus Stop and mitigate traffic congestion resulting from frequent stops at this location.

Over the last few months, the traffic gridlock occurring on Indian Creek Drive and 41st Street during peak commuting hours has become unbearable.  The frequent stops by buses and trolleys at the Bus Stop significantly impede the flow of traffic at the southbound right turn lane on Indian Creek Drive and 41st Street.

It is imperative that all available options for mitigating traffic congestion in this area be fully considered.  Accordingly, as part of this referral, I would like for our Transportation Department to research the various routes served by the Bus Stops (several of which may continue onto 41st Street), and provide any recommendations for the potential relocation of the Bus Stop, such as a potential relocation of the Bus Stop to a nearby location just south of 41st Street.
