DATE:March  1, 2017

SUBJECT:DISCUSSION AND DUAL REFERRAL TO THE SUSTAINABILITY AND RESILIENCY COMMITTEE AND THE FINANCE AND CITYWIDE PROJECTS COMMITTEE REGARDING TRANSITIONING TO NON-GAS POWERED LEAF BLOWERS FOR CITY STAFF AND CONTRACTORS.

RECOMMENDATION

Discuss and refer to the Sustainability and Resiliency Committee and the Finance and Citywide Projects Committee.

ANALYSIS

Please place on the March 1, 2017 Agenda, a discussion and dual referral to the Sustainability and Resiliency Committee and the Finance & Citywide Projects Committee regarding transitioning to non-gas powered leaf blowers for City staff and contractors.

It is time. I ran into a maintenance worker for a condominium, which shall remain nameless, and he was utilizing a STIHL electric powered leaf blower that was exponentially quieter than the gas-powered versions and obviously more environmentally sounds. My discussion with the worker was that the blower was comparably efficient and the battery was long lasting. I want our City to finally adopt a policy phasing out the gas-powered blowers for a litany of reasons. This item has been addressed many times, and nothing has ever come from the discussion other than discussion.
