COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:Commissioner Laura Dominguez
DATE:February  1, 2023

SUBJECT:DISCUSS TRAFFIC ON COLLINS AVENUE AND OTHER MAJOR CITY CORRIDORS.

ANALYSIS

Please place an item on the February 1, 2023 agenda to discuss significant traffic due to FDOT and/or FPL construction on Collins Avenue near 41st Street, as well as traffic in other areas of the City, including 5th Street, Alton Road, 63rd Street, and the Venetian causeway.

I have received many resident complaints in the last few days about the significant amount of time it is taking residents to travel short distances, particularly during the peak hours of 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

I believe we need additional traffic control and a heightened traffic control or police presence along major corridors, to keep traffic moving and prevent situations where drivers “block the box” and compound an already difficult traffic situation. I would ask that the Administration be prepared to address all it is doing right now with respect to traffic, and what additional measures – particularly additional traffic control personnel – could be implemented.

I also receive many complaints that traffic lights are not properly synchronized throughout the City. I understand this is within the exclusive jurisdiction of Miami-Dade County. I would like for my colleagues to consider urging Miami-Dade County to review these issues and identify a plan for troubleshooting in this area.
