Miami Beach residents Carla Probus and Jonas Meyers generously contributed $20,000 of personal funds to establish the Chief Mark Overton Law Enforcement Scholarship in honor of our late police chief. The donation was made to Miami Dade College to assist participants in the Miami Beach Police Athletic League (PAL) program enroll in a full-time degree-seeking program at the college’s Law Enforcement Academy. Other program criteria included residency requirement in the City of Miami Beach; demonstrating financial need based on financial aid standards, as determined by the College’s Financial Aid Office; and, a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 at the college or other institutions.
A neighboring local municipality that has received similar funds from the donor has advised on the success of the scholarship. However, to date, the donors have received limited information regarding the scholarship for Miami Beach.
With the adoption of this referral, the City Administration is directed to provide a memo at the next Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee meeting (February 28, 2023) with a status report on the scholarship, how many students have benefited from the fund, how the scholarship is being promoted, and if any changes are recommended to the scholarship criteria.
The City of Miami Beach appreciates the generosity of Carla Ann Probus and Jonas Meyers in supporting new applicants for the law enforcement academy in honor of Chief Mark Overton.
