COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:Commissioner Laura Dominguez
DATE:February  1, 2023

SUBJECT:REFERRAL TO THE FINANCE AND ECONOMIC RESILIENCY COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS FINANCIAL INCENTIVES FOR PRIVATE SEAWALL RESILIENCY PROJECTS, AS WELL AS AN UPDATE ON THE STATUS OF THE CITY’S PRIVATE PROPERTY ADAPTATION PROGRAM.

RECOMMENDATION

Please place on the February 1, 2023 City Commission agenda a referral to the Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee to discuss expanding the City’s private property adaptation grant program, to provide additional funding for private properties that desire to improve their seawalls for resiliency purposes, particularly for properties in low lying areas of the City, such as along the West Avenue corridor and Belle Isle.

As part of this referral, I would ask for the Administration to please be prepared to update the Committee on the implementation of the Private Property Adaptation Program in general, and how many grants are being awarded (if any) to private properties seeking to raise their seawalls in accordance with the City’s new seawall resiliency standards.

In addition, I would like for the Administration to advise how many properties have sought permits to raise their seawalls in accordance with the new seawall standards approved by the City Commission last year.
