COMMITTEE MEMORANDUM

TO: Finance and Citywide Projects Committee Members

FROM:
Jimmy L. Morales, City Manager

DATE: June 29, 2018

SUBJECT:

DISCUSSION REGARDING ADDING WEIGHT TRAINING EQUIPMENT AT MUSCLE BEACH

HISTORY:

At the June 6, 2018 City Commission meeting, a discussion to add weight training equipment at Muscle Beach was referred to the Finance and Citywide Projects (“FCWP”) Committee.

Muscle Beach serves as not only an outdoor area for exercise, weight lifting and gymnastics, but it is also highly trafficked by beach-goers and tourists. With its one of a kind setting and at a time when outdoor fitness is the area with the fastest growth in the health market, the incorporation of additional modern fitness elements would benefit the area.

To this end, the City recently improved the fitness area by replacing deteriorated workout components with modern, versatile and artistic equipment, namely the “MyBeast” and the “Leopard Tree” structures designed by MyEquilibria. The installation of the new equipment has been very well received and supported by residents and visitors alike. Recently, the City received a request from the local fitness community requesting the addition of fitness locker.  The locker would be able to house free weights and bars, which is currently a missing component at Muscle Beach.

ANALYSIS:

Exhibit A includes a proposal obtained by the local fitness community for weight training equipment from Beaver Fit. The proposal provides an example of fitness lockers which can be implemented at Muscle Beach to fill the weight lifting void. Aside from Beaver Fit, there are several other manufacturers that offer this type of equipment, such as Mobile Fitness Equipment and Hatlex.

Fitness containers are available in different sizes (5ft, 10ft, 20ft and 40ft models), and can be customized to match the color of the existing MyEquilibria equipment to blend seamlessly into the site. Additionally, these containers are military grade, as well as hot-dip galvanized and powder coated to hold up in the City’s ocean side environment. Costs for 20ft and 40ft options are approximately $60,000 and $95,000 respectively, and are inclusive of shipping, delivery and installation.

City staff has reviewed the material and concurs that the training rigs would complement the existing MyEquilibria equipment at the 9th Street Fitness Area.

CONCLUSION:

Committee direction on the desire for staff to explore the addition of weight training equipment at Muscle Beach.
