HISTORY:
At the July 13, 2016 Commission meeting, Commissioner John Elizabeth Aleman referred a discussion item regarding the renaming of North Shore Open Space Park to the Neighborhood and Community Affairs Committee (“NCAC”). The NCAC discussed the item on October 21, 2016 and referred to the Parks and Recreational Facilities Advisory Board for their feedback.
The Parks and Recreational Facilities Advisory Board met on January 12, 2017, and recommended North Shore Open Space Park to be renamed as “North Beach Oceanside Park” (Exhibit A). Noting the City’s efforts in creating an identity for “North Beach”, the Board discussed the identity of “South Beach” and agreed that a park with “North Beach” in its name would be consistent with the concept. Other names mentioned were: “North Shore Oceanfront Park”, “North Shore Beachfront Park” and “North Shore Beach Park.”
At the January 27, 2017 NCAC meeting, the item was moved to Commission without a recommendation. The Committee’s overall feedback on “North Beach Oceanside Park” was positive; however, discussion on keeping “North Shore” versus “North Beach” in the name was not agreed upon.
At the May 17, 2017 Commission meeting, a discussion was held and a motion was made by Commissioner Aleman to rename North Shore Open Space Park as “North Beach Oceanside Park”. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Ricky Arriola, but was opposed by Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, Commissioner Michael Grieco and Commissioner Mickey Steinberg. On June 7, 2017, Commissioner Aleman referred the renaming of North Shore Open Space Park to “North Beach Oceanside Park” to NCAC for further discussion.
In advance of a pending referral for a related item sponsored by Commissioner Rosen Gonzalez, the item for the renaming of North Shore Open Space Park to “North Beach Oceanside Park” was deferred at the June 30, 2017 NCAC meeting so all proposed names could be considered simultaneously.
At the July 26, 2017 Commission meeting, Commissioner Rosen Gonzalez referred a discussion on the renaming of North Shore Open Space Park to “North Shore Oceanside Park” to NCAC.
The NCAC deferred both of the renaming items at the July 28, 2017 Committee meeting to provide the Mayor’s North Beach Committee an opportunity to opine on the proposed names.
The Mayor’s North Beach Steering Committee met on August 3, 2017 and discussed North Beach and North Shore identities (Exhibit B). In a vote between North Beach Oceanside Park and North Shore Oceanside Park, the Committee voted to rename North Shore Open Space Park as “North Beach Oceanside Park” (Exhibit C).
This item was deferred at the September 27th and October 27th 2017 NCAC meetings.
