COMMITTEE MEMORANDUM

HISTORY:

At the July 13, 2016 Commission meeting, Commissioner John Elizabeth Aleman referred a discussion item regarding the renaming of North Shore Open Space Park to the Neighborhood and Community Affairs Committee (“NCAC”).

At its October 21, 2016 meeting, the NCAC discussed the renaming. Subsequently, the issue of the renaming was considered by the Parks and Recreational Facilities Advisory Board for its feedback.

ANALYSIS:

During the January 12, 2017 Parks and Recreational Facilities Advisory Board meeting, the Board recommended that North Shore Open Space Park be renamed “North Beach Oceanside Park.”

On January 27, 2017, the NCAC agreed that the renaming of the park be sent to Commission without a recommendation. The overall feedback on the name of “North Beach Oceanside Park” was positive; however, discussion on keeping “North Shore” in the name versus “North Beach” was not agreed upon.

At the May 17, 2017 City Commission meeting, a discussion was held and a motion was made by Commissioner John Elizabeth Aleman to rename North Shore Open Space Park as North Beach Oceanside Park and the proposed name was referred to the NCAC.

At the June 30, 2017 NCAC meeting, the item regarding the renaming of North Shore Open Space Park was deferred, pending a referral at the request of Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez proposing "North Shore Oceanside Park".

The proposed name of “North Shore Oceanside Park” was referred to the NCAC at the July 26^th Commission meeting.

At the July 28, 2017 NCAC meeting, the Committee deferred this item to provide the Mayor’s North Beach Steering Committee an opportunity to opine on the proposed names.

At the August 3, 2017 Mayor’s North Beach Steering Committee meeting, Committee members voted to rename North Shore Open Space Park as North Beach Oceanside Park.

CONCLUSION:

Committee direction on the renaming of North Shore Open Space Park.
