ANALYSIS:
At the January 12, 2017 Parks and Recreational Facilities Advisory Board meeting, the Board recommended for North Shore Open Space Park to be renamed “North Beach Oceanside Park.” The Board discussed the identity of “South Beach” and, noting the City is working toward creating an identity for “North Beach”, agreed that having the park name include “North Beach” would be consistent with the concept. Other names mentioned were: “North Shore Oceanfront Park”, “North Shore Beachfront Park” and “North Shore Beach Park.”
At the January 27, 2017 NCAC meeting, the renaming of the park was moved to Commission without a recommendation. The overall feedback on the name of “North Beach Oceanside Park” was positive; however, discussion on keeping “North Shore” in the name versus “North Beach” wasn’t agreed upon.
At the May 17, 2017 City Commission meeting, a discussion was held and a motion was made by Commissioner John Elizabeth Aleman to rename North Shore Open Space Park as North Beach Oceanside Park. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Ricky Arriola and was opposed by Vice-Mayor Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, Commissioner Michael Grieco and Commissioner Mickey Steinberg.
At the June 7, 2017 City Commission meeting, the item was referred to NCAC for further discussion.
At the June 30, 2017 NCAC meeting, the proposed name of "North Beach Oceanside Park" was deferred, pending a referral at the request of Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez to rename NSOSP as "North Shore Oceanside Park", so that all proposed names could be considered simultaneously.
At the July 26, 2017 Commission meeting, Commissioner Rosen Gonzalez referred a discussion item for the renaming of North Shore Open Space Park as “North Shore Oceanside Park” to NCAC.
At the July 28, 2017 NCAC meeting, the Committee deferred this item to provide the Mayor’s North Beach Steering Committee an opportunity to opine on the proposed names.
At the August 3, 2017 Mayor’s North Beach Steering Committee meeting, Committee members voted to rename North Shore Open Space Park to North Beach Oceanside Park.
