SUBJECT:REFERRAL TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD/COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMITTEE AND THE FINANCE AND CITYWIDE PROJECTS COMMITTEE - REQUEST FOR CITY TO SPONSOR THE STING SWIM CLUB.

ANALYSIS

Please add a referral to the Neighborhood/Community Affairs Committee and the Finance and Citywide Projects Committee a request for city sponsorship of the Sting Swim Club.

The Sting Swim Club is a community based swim team in Miami Beach. Their purpose is to enrich the lives of adults and youth through the sport of swimming. The Sting Swim Club is on the cutting edge of stroke development technique. They maintain a commitment to excellence, safety and fitness. Their practice structure is interval based. The adults have two one hour and a half sessions both in the morning and evening Monday through Friday. The youth have five evening sessions Monday through Friday, lasting two hours in length. The team is affiliated with Florida Gulf Coast (www.fgcswim.org) and is recognized by both USA Swimming and United States Masters Swimming (www.usms.org).

The Sting Swim Team's business structure is non profit based with 501c3 designation officially recognized by both the State of Florida and the IRS. The team recognizes that its coaching positions are an extension of Miami Beach's service motto: "....committed to providing excellent public service and safety to all who live, work and play in our vibrant, tropical historic community." As with other City sponsored teams (including Ft. Lauderdale), the salaries of Head Coach Mike Green is $45,000, and Assistant Coach Sandrine Clinton is $40,000, and the pool rental fees are underwritten.

Here are some examples of return on investment:

1.  Bring Michael Phelps Swim School curriculum to Miami Beach.

2. Raise the competitive profile of this city’s athletes by competing in: USA Swimming, USMS, WOWZA and FINA sanctioned competitions.

3.  Work with the city to become a circuit city for FINA's open water swim series.

4.  Host National and International Swim Meets at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

5.  Bid for and win as host city for Olympic Trials in 2020. 6. Opening of a Pro Swim Shop at Flamingo Pool.
