DISCUSSION REGARDING STUDENTS FROM MIAMI BEACH SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL SMOKING MARIJUANA OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL IN THE MORNING BY THE COLLINS CANAL



KEY INTENDED OUTCOME:

HISTORY:
At the May 17, 2017 Commission meeting, item R9 AD provided for a discussion regarding students from Miami Beach Senior High School smoking marijuana outside the school in the morning by the Collins Canal.

ANALYSIS:

Miami-Dade County Public Schools currently has drug and alcohol education as part of the health education curriculum that is integrated into physical education classes.  All middle schools have a textbook to use when implementing the curriculum.   The below link provides curriculum resources on substance abuse prevention for grades 5 - 12:  http://pe.dadeschools.net/substanceabuseprevention.asp

Additionally, MDCPS implements a Red Ribbon Month in October and Informed Families Campaigns throughout the district.   Student Services has programs that address substance abuse through their Trust office (http://studentservices.dadeschools.net/trust/index.asp).

Current programs by grade level, although not all offered at public schools in Miami Beach, are as follows:

Elementary School

  •      Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) – 5th grade curriculum

Middle School

  •     Drug and alcohol education is part of our health education curriculum that is integrated into physical education. All middle schools have a textbook to use when implementing the curriculum. Below is a link to all of our curriculum resources on substance abuse prevention for grades 5 - 12:

  •     Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) – Middle and High School

High School

  • Health Information Project (HIP) – High School
  • Student’s Against Destructive Decision (SADD)- High School
  • Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) – Middle and High School
  • AAA Prom Promise Campaign- High School
  • TRUST Curriculum- Middle and High School


CONCLUSION:
City administration will work with Miami Dade County Public Schools to support current program implementation, and to identify best practice strategies to encourage drug prevention practices at all public schools in Miami Beach.
