On February 21, 2024, and at my request, the City Commission referred an item to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee (PSNQLC) to review and discuss the City's Modal Prioritization Strategy established in 2015 as part of the City’s Transportation Master Plan.
I would like the City Commission to additionally refer this matter to the Land Use and Sustainability Committee (LUSC), given that the LUSC is tasked with reviewing matters relating to planning, infrastructure, and mobility.
The Modal Prioritization Strategy, which prioritized pedestrians first, followed by transit, bicycles, and freight, with private automobiles being last, was a commendable step towards promoting sustainable and inclusive transportation practices.
Given the evolving needs of our City and advancements in transportation technology, I believe it is imperative to reassess this strategy with guidance from the City Administration. By revisiting and potentially refining this approach, we can ensure that our transportation policies align with current urban development goals, promote equitable access to mobility options, and prioritize safety and sustainability for all residents.
