COMMITTEE MEMORANDUM

TO: Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee Members

FROM:
Rickelle Williams, Interim City Manager

DATE: May 24, 2024

SUBJECT:

DISCUSS CREATING A FUND TO PROVIDE FITTED UNIFORMS FOR FRONTLINE PERSONNEL, SUCH AS SANITATION, CODE ENFORCEMENT AND PARKING ENFORCEMENT STAFF

HISTORY:

At the Janaury 31, 2024, City Commission meeting, the Mayor and City Commission approved the referral of item C4 R, sponsored by Commissioner David Suarez, to the Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee (FERC) to discuss the possible creation of fund to provide fitted uniforms for frontline personnel, specifically for staff in Sanitation, Code Enforcement, and Parking Enforcement duties.

The uniforms provided to these employees, in addition to a uniform cleaning allowance, are specified within their respective collective bargaining agreements, having been negotiated during the bargaining process. Uniforms issued are chosen based on considerations of employee safety and comfort, as well as cost. The department works with the respective unions on final selections.

Currently, the Sanitation Division spends approximately $70,000 per year on uniforms, while the Code Enforcement and Parking Enforcement Departments spend $59,000 and $64,000 per year, respectively, not including any contractual cleaning allowances. These figures underscore the significant annual financial commitment involved in outfitting our frontline personnel appropriately.
