TO: Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee Members

FROM:
Alina T. Hudak, City Manager

DATE: March 22, 2024

SUBJECT:DISCUSS SPONSORSHIP OF MIA MEDIA GROUP LEGACY 20TH ANNIVERSARY GALA, IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $25,000 FOR THE 2024 EVENT

HISTORY:

On February 21, 2024, at the request of Commissioner Tanya K. Bhatt, the Mayor and City Commission referred a discussion item (C4 W) to the Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee, regarding sponsorship of the MIA Media Group Legacy 20th Anniversary gala.

The MIA Media Group LLC is one of the nation’s largest Black publishers, with more than one million readers. The company publishes Legacy Miami, Legacy South Florida through the Miami Herald and Sun Sentinel newspapers and digital magazines. The publications serve South Florida’s Black community in Miami-Dade County with insightful, and informative topics that editorialize the success and achievements of Black industry leaders, educators, policymakers, and more important, the next generation. The February 2024 Black History Month edition featured one of Miami Beach’s Black leaders, Miami Beach Police Department Chief Wayne Jones, on the cover and within the publication illustrating how Miami Beach is an evolving, maturing and welcoming city.

ANALYSIS:

MIA Media Group desires to host its 20th Anniversary Gala at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel to celebrate South Florida’s powerful and influential Black business leaders for 2024. The event is planned for May 18, 2024.

A $25,000 sponsorship would provide Miami Beach an opportunity to network and engage with South Florida’s Black business leadership and community as well as promote Miami Beach as a “forward thinking community” for business entrepreneurs, investors and enterprising professionals looking to build an ambitious, prosperous and productive future. Meaningful participation in the noteworthy anniversary event and access to future collaborations and promotions may attract new businesses to Miami Beach, encourage expansion of existing businesses, and propel communication of Miami Beach’s commitment to stimulating a balanced, diverse, and dynamic economy and community.

The $25,000 platinum sponsorship will help to celebrate South Florida’s best and brightest honorees, and also foster Miami Beach’s brand and goodwill to the community and in the MIA Media Group publications through August, which is National Black Business Month, and beyond. The Sponsorship package is anticipated to include the following elements, as may be negotiated, revised and finalized by Economic Development Department staff via a sponsorship agreement.

• VIP table(s) at a preferred location
• Logo/name in all advertising including print, broadcast and newsletters
• Branding on invitations and promotional materials
• Prominent signage at event
• Host Honoree Reception
• Opportunity to offer remarks during the program
• Full page ad in souvenir journal
• Four months of advertisements in weekly newsletter
• Mentions in all pre and post event publicity including press release and after gala photos
• Sponsorship of awards slide show

FINANCIAL INFORMATION
The fiscal impact of this sponsorship is $25,000 in Fiscal Year 2024. Funding for this purpose is available within the Economic Development Department budget for Fiscal Year 2024.

CONCLUSION:

The Administration recommends that the Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee discuss the sponsorship opportunity and offer a favorable recommendation to the Mayor and City Commission to proceed with a $25,000 sponsorship for the MIA Media Group LLC Legacy 20th Anniversary gala.
