COMMISSION MEMORANDUM |

| | | | | | | | | TO: | Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission | | | FROM: | Mayor Steven Meiner | | | DATE: | March 13, 2024 | | | |
| | SUBJECT: | DISCUSS/TAKE ACTION, CITY ATTORNEY SELECTION PROCESS. |

| | | | | | | | ANALYSIS
|
On February 26, 2024, City Attorney Rafael Paz provided the City Commission with 90 days prior notice, a copy of which is attached hereto, that he is stepping down at the end of May to pursue an opportunity in the private sector.
Under the City Charter, the Mayor and City Commission appoint the City Attorney. In view of the many challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, and the momentum this Commission has achieved in just a few short months on many matters, I believe that it is in the best interest of the City to move forward with a City Attorney selection swiftly.
Every member of the City Commission works closely with the City Attorney’s Office on their legislative and other initiatives. I look forward to discussing this matter at the March 13, 2024 City Commission meeting, in an effort to proceed with a selection process which provides for stability and continuity for a legal department with high standards of professionalism. Based on the Office’s unique knowledge of the City Charter, City Code, pending litigation, regulatory and transactional matters, as well as the City Commission’s legislative priorities, I believe the City Commission should first seek applications from qualified internal candidates who could seamlessly fill this important role. |
