Anyone who commutes to/from the City via the Julia Tuttle Causeway (I-195) is often stuck in traffic during peak travel times. The Mount Sinai Medical Center, the Fontainebleau Hotel are the two largest employers in the City of Miami Beach. The Eden Roc Hotel is another large employer in the Mid Beach area. I would like to discuss with my colleagues, and take action as necessary, the idea of directing the Administration to convene one or more meeting(s) with representatives from Mount Sinai, the Fontainebleau, the Eden Roc and other large employers in the City to consider the feasibility of staggering work shifts to help improve traffic congestion.
Staggered work hour programs are a variation of flexible work hour programs. Such programs alternate the arrival of groups of employees and can help reduce the number of workers traveling to and from work during the peak-volume times helping to improve traffic congestion. In addition, staggered shifts will ease crowding at entrances/exits to the employers’ businesses, which will also aid in reducing bottlenecks on certain roadways and/or at those entrances/exits.
The appropriate representatives from the Transportation Departments and Economic Development Department should be prepared to address this matter before the Commission.
