COMMITTEE MEMORANDUM

TO: Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee Members

FROM:
Alina T. Hudak, City Manager

DATE: March 20, 2024

SUBJECT:

DISCUSS MBPD EFFORTS TO PATROL THE MID-BEACH AREA.

HISTORY:

Commissioner Fernandez placed a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee (PSNQLC) on the October 18, 2023 City Commission Meeting agenda to discuss the Miami Beach Police Department's (MBPD) efforts to patrol the Mid-Beach.

ANALYSIS

The City of Miami Beach's Middle District patrol area where the Mid Beach Neighborhood Association is situated is currently staffed daily per shift with at least one lieutenant and sergeant, the Mid-Beach Neighborhood Resource Officer and dedicated beat officer coverage on the Venetian Causeway, North Bay Road and 41st Street.

In addition, the Department has specialized traffic units to include the Motorcycle Unit and Accident Investigation Team who are responsible for the enforcement of traffic laws within all police patrol areas of the city to include Mid-Beach.

Supplementing the resources mentioned are officers and civilian employees in Marine Patrol, the Park Ranger Corps and specialized details as needed.

In 2023, MBPD officers responded to 16,488 calls for service in Mid-Beach. Of those and specifically within the Mid Beach Neighborhood Association which encompasses Collins Avenue and Indian Creek Drive, the Department responded to 4,570 calls for service.  Since January 2022, the Department has issued 1,380 citations and since January 2023, 211 arrests have been made.

CONCLUSION:

Police staffing solely for the purposes of patrolling the areas from 24th to 60th Streets on Collins Avenue and Indian Creek Drive would require additional police resources which can be requested as part of future budget enhancements.
