ANALYSIS

I would like to refer a discussion to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee to consider re-naming the “Tatum Waterway Walkway” to “Tatum Waterway Nature Trail,” as well as consider making improvements to the trail to provide for a revitalized recreational outdoors space for residents and visitors.

The Tatum Waterway, Walkway also known as Crab Alley, is an often-forgotten little walkway trail that connects Park View Island to 75th Street, 77th Street to Biscayne Beach Elementary, and the Biscayne Point / 77th Street neighborhood. This trail is an asphalt paved, walking/bike route that offers beautiful, secluded canal views, and little fishing spots along the entire trail.

In its current state, the trail faces challenges such as broken sidewalks, overgrown vegetation, and safety hazards. The overgrown roots of trees are lifting the asphalt, posing a threat to bikers and creating trip hazards. The trail, despite its potential, lacks the love and attention it deserves, especially during the summer months when maintenance is lacking.

To draw attention to the trail's potential, Park View Island Sustainable Development Association wishes to propose renaming it as the "Tatum Waterway Nature Trail." By rebranding and investing City resources and services into the trail repair, we can add yet another beautiful natural outdoor space for our residents and visitors to enjoy.

Specifically, the key issues and proposed improvements for this hidden gem should include repairing/replacing the asphalt for walkability and safety, improving lighting along the trail to ensure visibility and security, adding trash cans and doggy waste stations, and introducing creative native landscaping to enhance the trail's aesthetics.
