On behalf of the sponsor of this item, Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, please place on the January 31, 2024 agenda a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee to discuss potential solutions to light pollution from garish multi-colored decorative lights at residences, often short-term rentals or “party houses,” that spill onto adjacent properties.
For instance, we might consider prohibiting exterior lighting above a certain height, or providing for a code violation unless a light baffling instrument is employed to limit light pollution. We could also consider, to the extent we are allowed by state law, to regulate exterior lights at short-term rental properties with a City BTR.
I am open to recommendations City Staff and my colleagues as to the best and most effective solutions.
