Please place a discuss/take action item on the September 13, 2023 agenda to request that the Administration provide the City Commission with a complete project overview and update on the North Beach Oceanside Park Project, including the history of the project, the scope of the project, and the work remaining to be done. The Administration should also explain how the damage to the park will be corrected and remediated to restore the lush natural habitat.
The North Beach Oceanside Park is a 28-acre quiet beachfront oasis in the heart of North Beach that provides residents with a haven from the hustle and bustle of urban life. As of this time, I have not been fully briefed on the various components of the new park project, as much of the project scope was developed years ago before I was elected to office. Specifically, there are certain elements of the current project that many residents have found objectionable, such as the excessive pruning of sea grape trees which, while well-intended, serve to change the character of the Park.
For this reason, I believe City Commission involvement is necessary to proactively address concerns, provide a platform for constructive dialogue and options which may be available to the City Commission for further scope changes that would better preserve the natural, lush character of the park. As part of this discussion item, I ask that the Administration be prepared to address options for mitigating these issues, so that we could collaboratively make the appropriate scope adjustments which may be necessary to complete a project that better reflects our community’s input and priorities.
