COMMISSION MEMORANDUM |
| | | |
| | | | | | | | | TO: | Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission | | | FROM: | Commissioner Laura Dominguez | | | DATE: | July 26, 2023 | | | |
| | SUBJECT: | REFERRAL TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS OPTIONS FOR INCORPORATING SOLAR ENERGY INSTALLATIONS AS PART OF CITY CAPITAL PROJECTS. |

| | | | | | | | ANALYSIS
|
Please place on the July 26, 2023 agenda a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee to discuss options for incorporating solar energy panels on select City buildings or other public spaces, as part of City capital projects.
Solar energy is a leading renewable energy source with immense potential. Considering the growing urgency to transition to clean energy, it is essential for the City to integrate solar panels into the City's capital projects, to the fullest extent possible.
Incorporating solar panels in capital projects can significantly reduce the City's carbon footprint and contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change. Solar panels can also help improve the energy efficiency of buildings and infrastructure by generating power locally, reduce transmission losses, and alleviate strain on the electrical grid. Moreover, solar installations can enhance the City's resilience by providing a decentralized energy source during power outages or emergencies.
I would like for the Administration to evaluate options for incorporating solar panels in various capital projects, and identify buildings, infrastructure, or open spaces that are suitable for solar installations. Considering the complexities associated with solar energy implementation, I request the Administration to be prepared to address any permitting challenges, costs, and other considerations associated with solar panel installations on select City buildings, including identifying a City capital project where solar panels could potentially be incorporated, perhaps as an initial pilot.
