Auto burglaries throughout Miami-Dade County have increased in recent months. As of January 1, 2023, there have been 79 auto burglaries in Mid Beach. The Miami Beach Police Department (MBPD) has subsequently assigned its Burglary Apprehension Team to multiple details throughout the city. In addition, the department's Criminal Investigation Division has sought help from other agencies who have identified key subjects in these burglaries leading to three significant arrests.
Over 700,000 drivers fall victim to vehicle theft each year across the U.S. A vehicle is stolen about every 44 seconds in America, according to the National Highway Traffic Security Administration.
MBPD regularly shares messages with the community regarding crime prevention and safety tips. This information is shared across police and city social media platforms, NextDoor, MB Magazine, city newsletters and direct outreach from our Neighborhood Resource Officers. Below is some key messaging to help in reducing these types of crimes:
Nearly half of the vehicle thefts are due to driver error, such as leaving keys in the vehicle.
Always take your keys with you, close your windows, lock the doors, and park in well-lit areas.
Never leave valuables in your vehicle, especially where they can be seen, or leave the area while your car is running.
Additionally, officers have been directed to conduct proactive patrols within the neighborhoods.
