| SUBJECT: | DISCUSSION REGARDING RENAMING THE PRIME SOFTBALL FIELD AT FLAMINGO PARK AS “ANDY DIAMOND SOFTBALL FIELD” AFTER FORMER PITCHER AND COACH, ANDY DIAMOND. |
|
| | | | | | | | HISTORY:
| During the May 17, 2023 Commission meeting, a discussion was referred to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee (“PSNQLC”) by Commissioner Laura Dominguez to consider naming the softball field at Flamingo Park as “Andy Diamond Softball Field” after former pitcher and coach, Andy Diamond. (Exhibit A). |
| | |
| | | | | | | | ANALYSIS
| Mr. Andy Diamond dedicated his life to coaching thousands of children throughout the City during his lifetime. Mr. Diamond passed away on January 26, 2023. With support from Commissioner Laura Dominguez, residents impacted by Mr. Diamond’s public service would like to have the softball field at Flamingo Park named in his honor. With a last name like Diamond, the community finds that the naming would be fitting because baseball and softball fields are also commonly referred to as “diamond fields.”
To re-name portions of a public facility, including interior portions of a park, Section 82-503(b) of the City Code requires review by a Committee, and subsequently, a public hearing and a 5/7ths vote of the City Commission. |
| | |
| | | | | | | | CONCLUSION:
Approval in naming the softball field at Flamingo Park as “Andy Diamond Softball Field” after former pitcher and coach, Andy Diamond.
