COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:Commissioner Laura Dominguez
DATE:April  28, 2023

SUBJECT:REFERRAL TO THE FINANCE AND ECONOMIC RESILIENCY COMMITTEE FOR A DISCUSSION REGARDING BEACHWALK PEDESTRIAN SAFETY AND INSTALLATION OF BOLLARDS AND SIGNAGE CAUTIONING BICYCLISTS TO SLOW DOWN.

RECOMMENDATION

Ever since its completion, the City’s seven (7) mile long beautiful and scenic Beachwalk has become a highly successful amenity for thousands of residents and visitors.

Due to the success of the Beachwalk, the City has experienced challenges with balancing the use of the Beachwalk by pedestrians and bicyclists. I have received several complaints from pedestrians who believe that many bicyclists on the Beachwalk are operating at very high speeds, presenting safety risks for other bicyclists and pedestrians using the Beachwalk.

I would like to refer this item to the Finance and Economic Resilience Committee to consider the installation of solar-powered bollards with flashing “Slow Down” signs at key sections of the Beachwalk to remind bicyclists to lower their speed while cycling on the Beachwalk. Prior to the Committee hearing this item, I would like for the Administration to identify proposed locations for the installation of the bollards and to identify estimated costs of installing and maintaining solar-powered bollards. I would further like to request to include and prioritize the installation of the solar-powered bollards as part of the annual budget for FY 24.
