COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:Vice-Mayor Ricky Arriola
DATE:April  28, 2023

SUBJECT:REFERRAL TO THE FINANCE AND ECONOMIC RESILIENCY COMMITTEE - DISCUSS EXPANDING RECREATIONAL USES AT THE MIAMI BEACH GOLF COURSE.

ANALYSIS

The Miami Beach Golf Course is a prime public space that could benefit from the addition of new recreational activities like soccer, baseball, padel, pickleball, and more. The introduction of these sports would help diversify the offerings of the golf course and attract a broader range of visitors to the area. Additionally, a reimagined public space that incorporates stormwater capture and treatment features could help mitigate the effects of severe weather events like hurricanes and sunny day flooding. By reducing the amount of fresh water used for golfing and limiting the application of toxic herbicides and insecticides, this redesign could also significantly reduce the negative environmental impacts the golf course has on Biscayne Bay. Ultimately, by embracing change and investing in a more resilient and sustainable public space, a reimagined Miami Beach Golf Course, as recommended by Jacobs Engineering, can become a model for other communities striving to balance recreational opportunities with environmental responsibility.
