COMMISSION MEMORANDUM |
| | | |
| | | | | | | | TO: | Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission | | FROM: | Vice-Mayor Ricky Arriola | | DATE: | April 28, 2023 | | |
| SUBJECT: | REFERRAL TO THE LAND USE AND SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS THE LIVE LOCAL ACT. |
| | | |
| | | | | | | | ANALYSIS
| Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a new law, the "Live Local Act," that will allocate $711 million toward affordable housing. The bill more than doubles the funding for housing and rental programs, provides incentives for investment in affordable housing, and encourages mixed-use developments in struggling commercial areas.
The bill also preempts local government rules on zoning, density, and building heights in certain circumstances. The bill creates tax exemptions for developments that set aside at least 70 units for affordable housing and will speed permits and development orders for affordable-housing projects.
I ask that the City administration and City attorney's office provide an analysis to the Land Use and Sustainability Committee regarding how they expect this bill will affect Miami Beach's ability to incentivize affordable/ workforce housing. |
