SUBJECT:DISCUSSION REGARDING A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, ALLOCATING A GRANT TO THE MIAMI BEACH POLICE ATHLETIC LEAGUE (PAL), INC. TO BE USED FOR ITS COUNSELOR IN TRAINING (CIT) TEEN SUMMER WORK PROGRAM

HISTORY:

Commissioner Richardson placed a referral to the Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee (FERC) on the February 22, 2023, City Commission meeting to discuss the previous funding allocation and review funding levels going forward to support the Miami Beach Police Athletic League's (PAL) Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Summer Work program.

ANALYSIS:

The Miami Beach Police Athletic League (PAL) works closely with the Miami Beach Parks and Recreation Department to hire deserving teenagers, ages 14-16, as a pathway to become youth counselors during the summer months.

The PAL's goal is to hire an additional 15 counselors bringing the total to 40 for the summer work program. The current service level budget is $67,000.00. The PAL has completed an analysis and determined a deficit of $50,700.00, bringing the total amount to fund the program to $117,700.00.

This enhancement request is being submitted for consideration in the FY 2024 budget, as discussed at the February 22, 2023, City Commission meeting.

CONCLUSION:

The PAL is prepared to discuss the request for the additional $50,700.00 funding consideration at the upcoming FERC meeting.
