COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez
DATE:April  28, 2023

SUBJECT:DISCUSS/TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT SINGLE-FAMILY HOME DEVELOPMENTS FROM NEW CONSTRUCTION.

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

What is the City of Miami Beach doing to ensure that elevated properties adjacent next to older homes are not flooding them and installing the appropriate retaining walls?

We received this email from a resident:

"Hi Kristen,

Here is an update: Just on our block alone there are three new developments with elevated lots. Due to the lack of foresight, two previous developments with elevated lots have no retaining walls to protect their neighbors. As I mentioned before, reducing the low-elevation areas of older homes means reducing the surface area to absorb the same amount of flood water that was absorbed before by a much larger area. This wouldn't be a problem, if the City protected low-elevation properties. The City, however, ignores the problem and helps developers to drive out impacted property owners."
