Please place on the March 27, 2023 agenda a discussion item and referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee regarding the implementation of a secured perimeter during select weekends of Spring Break on Ocean Drive and potentially surrounding areas, in order to prevent future violent acts committed within our City.
I would like for the Administration to review establishing a secured perimeter surrounding Ocean Drive and potentially surrounding areas similar to the Ultra Music Festival located at Bayfront Park and to conduct a study to review possible strategic entry checkpoints operated by our Miami Beach Police Department and security personnel. It is necessary for such entry checkpoints to be equipped with metal detectors in order to check for firearms and other weapons and Police K-9’s to intercept narcotics from entering Ocean Drive and surrounding areas.
I propose individuals wishing to enter the enclosed area within Ocean Drive and the surrounding areas would require a ticketed admission (for purchase or free) in order to enter during Spring Break periods. I propose an activation such as a concert by Lummus Park which would have a capacity limit and would require admission only after passing a metal detector, similar to what takes place to gain admission to the Ultra Music Festival.
