| SUBJECT: | DISCUSS MIAMI BEACH POLICE OFFICERS BEING DELAYED WHILE TRANSPORTING PRISONERS TO THE TURNER GUILFORD KNIGHT CORRECTIONAL CENTER. |
|
| | | | | | | | HISTORY:
| Commissioner Meiner placed a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee (PSNQLC) on the December 14, 2022 City Commission Meeting agenda to discuss MBPD officers being delayed while transporting prisoners to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. |

| | | | | | | | ANALYSIS
| The Miami-Dade Turner Guilford Knight (TGK) Correctional Center is a medium-security detention center located at 7000 NW 41 Street in Miami. The facility is operated locally by the Miami-Dade County Corrections Department and holds inmates awaiting trial, sentencing, or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. TGK accepts inmates from surrounding towns and municipalities, including the Miami Beach Police Department.
The MBPD is serviced by the TGK intake facility in addition to the more than thirty (30) police agencies. As a result, Miami Dade Corrections has developed strict policies to account for safety protocols when delivering arrestees from across the County. Each agency is admitted into the secured facility based upon arrival order and availability of Correctional Officers to receive, admit and process arrestees. When transporting arrestees to TGK, no agency has the authority to maneuver outside their standing protocol. At certain times during the day, it is reasonable to expect delays due to the volume of arrestees arriving at the facility.

| | |
| | | | | | | | CONCLUSION: The Miami Beach Police Department will continue to work with Miami-Dade Corrections and the Miami-Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police to ensure the most efficient protocols are in place.
