FROM:

DATE: November 30, 2022

SUBJECT:

DISCUSS TREE LIGHTING ENHANCEMENTS IN CERTAIN STRATEGIC AREAS OF SOUTH BEACH, SIMILAR TO SUCCESSFUL TREE LIGHTING ENHANCEMENTS IN OTHER AREAS OF THE CITY, SUCH AS 41ST STREET AND 71ST STREET.

HISTORY:

At its October 26, 2022 meeting, the City Commission approved a referral to the Public Safety and Quality of Life Committee (PSNQLC) to discuss tree lighting enhancements in certain strategic areas of South Beach, similar to the tree lighting enhancements on 41st  Street and 71st  Street, approved at the January 20, 2022 City Commission, via Resolution No. 2022-32011.

Since the approval of the Resolution, Commissioner Meiner has been working closely with the Public Works Department and various stakeholders to potentially expand tree lighting enhancement program to other areas in the City.  The enhancements are subject to available funding.

ANALYSIS

Summary of the locations selected for enhancements include:

  • Collins Avenue, from north of 15th Street to Lincoln Road: This includes approximately 25 sabal palms wrapped with new white tree lights. The installation costs are approximately $30,000.
  • Lincoln Road East, from Washington Avenue to east of Collins Ave: This includes numerous palm trees in the median strip wrapped with new white ornamental tree lights. The installation costs, which include establishing connection points and timer are estimated at $35,000.

CONCLUSION:

At this time, the Public Works Department is on track to complete the Collins Ave lighting enhancement prior to Thanksgiving 2022.   The Lincoln Road East lighting enhancement installation is pending material acquisition from the Contractor. No other tree lighting enhancement projects are scheduled at this time.
