| SUBJECT: | DISCUSSION REGARDING PADEL COURTS ON 4000 CHASE AVENUE PARKING LOT 60 |
|
| | | | | | | | HISTORY:
| At the April 6, 2022 City Commission meeting, a discussion regarding Padel courts on 4000 Chase Avenue Parking Lot 60 was referred to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee (“PSNQLC”).
During the July 27, 2022 PSNQLC meeting, Administration was given the direction of returning to the September 21, 2022 meeting with ideas for Padel at the greenspace adjacent the 35th Street surface lot, near Faena. |

| | | | | | | | ANALYSIS
| As per the direction of the Committee, the Parks and Recreation Department has been working diligently on this request. The site on 35th Street could potentially fit up to four (4) courts in a North to South orientation. This would also allow space for amenities such as benches, trash cans, pathways, etc.
It is important to note that there may be environmental issues that need to be addressed due to the site’s proximity to the ocean, requiring permission from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Due to those environmental restrictions, lighting the courts will likely not be possible. Another important factor to consider is the strong winds along the oceanfront which can affect play. Padel does consist of walls, which will help with some wind mitigation.
The approximate cost per Padel court is $170,000 (without lighting), or $249,000 per lit court. |
| | |
| | | | | | | | CONCLUSION: These padel courts are not currently funded. It is recommended that the Committee provide direction that allows for further research of the environmental issues. Future options would be recommended as part of future budget considerations.
