Please place on the June 22, 2022 City Commission agenda a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee (the “Committee”) to discuss the serious concerns with excessively high levels of bacteria in the Park View Island canal ever since a sewer force main break occurred in the area in March of 2020.  Since bacteria counts from a sanitary sewer break typically recede after a few days, the unusual and chronic nature of the elevated bacteria levels in the canal might indicate that there are other sources of contamination.  

I understand that the Administration has worked with consultants and regulatory agencies to conduct tests and review data, and is making a recommendation at the June 22, 2022 City Commission meeting to engage University of Miami researchers to assist in finding a resolution.  

I believe a discussion at the Committee would be helpful to review and educate the public about the efforts the City has undertaken to date, as well as any findings or recommendations made by the University of Miami and/or the City Administration. I would ask the Administration to please be prepared to discuss these issues, as well as the steps taken to conduct outreach and educate the public.
