This item was referred on April 6, 2022 to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee by Commissioner Kristen Rosen-Gonzalez.
On February 28, 2018, towing permits expired and through Resolution No. 2018-30662, on February 14, 2018 the Mayor and City Commission approved extending the towing permits for a period of one (1) year and directed the Administration to work with the Permittees to improve service and tow yard enclosures and further referred the item to the Neighborhood/Community Affairs Committee.
On or about December 2018, the City of Miami Beach Internal Auditor and his staff undertook an audit of the City's two (2) towing permittees. Furthermore on December 12, 2018, the Mayor and City commission authorized a one (1) year extension of the permits with added requirements through March 1, 2019.
Through Resolution No. 2020-31147, the Mayor and City Commission urged the City's Inspector General (IG) to finalize audit reports on the towing companies and furthermore, extended the current towing permits on a month-to month basis up to six (6) months after expiration date. Since then, permits have been extended in three (3) to six (6) month increments, with the last extension expiring on August 28, 2022.
