SUBJECT:DISCUSS THE BEACHWALK CLEANING SCHEDULE AND THE COST OF ADDING AN ADDITIONAL CLEANUP CREW.

HISTORY:

At its January 20, 2022 meeting, the City Commission approved a dual referral to the Finance and Economic Resiliency and Neighborhoods and Quality of Life Committees to discuss the Beachwalk cleaning schedule and the cost of adding an additional cleanup crew.

ANALYSIS

The City of Miami Beach recently completed construction on the section of Beachwalk, extending from 46th Street to 63rd Street.  The new section of Beachwalk includes new pavers, landscaping, 30 new litter containers, and 12 doggie bag dispensers.  This area is serviced by six (6) Sanitation crew members from the North Beach Recreational Corridor area, seven days a week.  Also, in order to enhance the cleanliness levels along the section of Beachwalk between 46th Street and 53rd Street, the Sanitation Division is in the process of installing additional doggie bag dispensers for the collection and disposal of dog waste.  

 

Construction on the newest section of Beachwalk (from 24th Street to 46th Street,) is almost completed.  The new section currently has about 63 litter and recycling containers, and City staff are currently in the process of adding doggie bag dispensers.  This area is maintained by four (4) crew members, operating 7 days a week.

 

City staff are currently monitoring the cleanliness needs of these two areas.  Thus far, the Sanitation Division has been able to maintain an optimal level of cleaning service, and is comfortable in maintaining the same number of crew members and days of operation in both areas of the Beachwalk.  Once the newest section of Beachwalk formally opens to the public, staff will re-evaluate these areas and determine the need for additional crew members and/or additional days of operation.

 

CONCLUSION:

The Sanitation Division has been able to maintain an optimal level of cleaning service, and is comfortable in maintaining the same number of crew members and days of operation in both areas of the Beachwalk.  Once the newest section of Beachwalk formally opens to the public, staff will re-evaluate these areas and determine the need for additional crew members and/or additional days of operation.
