| SUBJECT: | DISCUSS THE SURVEY CONDUCTED OF MIAMI BEACH RESIDENTS REGARDING CRIME LEVELS IN THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH. |
|
| | | | | | | | HISTORY:
| Commissioner Samuelian placed a referral to the Neighborhood and Quality of Life Committee (NQLC) on the December 08, 2021 City Commission Meeting agenda to discuss the results of an e.pluribus.US survey conducted of Miami Beach residents regarding crime levels in the city. |
| | |
| | | | | | | | ANALYSIS
| The Miami Beach Police Department reviewed the e.pluribus.US survey conducted in October of 2021 which presents Miami Beach residents’ attitudes toward crime. The survey, conducted in October of 2021 by 151 respondents (97 specifically from Miami Beach), addresses policy, leadership and administration, quality of life matters, and policing strategies.
While the survey is informative in nature, e.pluribus.US included a disclaimer specifying that the results were directional, non-conclusive, and qualitative in nature as opposed to purely scientific and should be considered in the context of broader data sources. Taking this into consideration, the Department researched and identified a scientific survey conducted by Morning Consult/Politico (https://morningconsult.com/2021/07/14/violent-crime-public-safety-polling/) at the national level which yielded similar results. In this second survey, a large majority of voters (78%) agreed that 2021’s rise in violent crime in the United States was a major problem. This number is almost equal to the results obtained by respondents in the e.pluribus.US survey who described crime as a serious problem (79.4%).
The Department has policing strategies in place that address all facets of the items highlighted in both the local and national surveys. As a result of these strategies, crime has shown a steady decline over the last 10 years, even while tourism to the City of Miami Beach has been consistent and robust. |
| | |
| | | | | | | | CONCLUSION:
The City of Miami Beach will be conducting its biennial general satisfaction survey in the near future. That said, the Department supports all efforts to garner and engage the community and their perceptions of crime and the Department’s efforts to address it. If warranted, the Police Department remains open to conducting an additional in-depth analysis based on the results of both surveys.
