COMMITTEE MEMORANDUM

TO: Neighborhood and Quality of Life Committee Members

FROM:
Alina T. Hudak, City Manager

DATE: March 7, 2022

SUBJECT:DISCUSS CREATING A DOG PARK IN FAIRWAY PARK

HISTORY:

During the January 20, 2021 City Commission meeting, a referral to the Neighborhood and Quality of Life Committee to discuss creating a dog park in Fairway Park, was passed.

ANALYSIS

A need for a dog park was identified at Fairway Park (201 Fairway Drive) and has been included in the scope of work for Phase II of the Fairway Park Improvements Project. Phase I of the Fairway Park Improvements Project was completed, and Phase II of the Fairway Park project is programmed to be spilt funded in FY 23 and FY 24.

Currently, a dog park exists within a 10-minute walking distance at the intersection of Rue Vendome and Biarrtiz Drive. Other nearby dog parks are located at North Beach Oceanside Park (Collins Avenue and 81st Street), and at Stillwater Park (8440 Hawthorne Avenue).

Based on the expected capital project funding schedule, the dog park can be created during FY 24 or later.

Financial Impact:

If desired, the creation of a dog park is feasible. The cost to build a dog park at Fairway Park would be approximately $80,000.00, based on current market pricing. This cost would include providing a fenced-in area, water fountains, seating amenities, trash & recycling bins, signage and permitting costs. The Parks and Recreation Department currently does not have funding for the execution of this phase of the project.

CONCLUSION:

Committee direction regarding the creation of a dog park at Fairway Park.
