COMMISSION MEMORANDUM |
| | | |
| | | | | | | | | TO: | Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission | | | FROM: | Commissioner Michael Gongora | | | DATE: | October 13, 2021 | | | |
| | SUBJECT: | DISCUSSION REGARDING 40 YEAR RECERTIFICATION BUILDING DEPARTMENT PROCESS. |
| | | |
| | | | | | | | ANALYSIS
| | Please place on the July 28th Commission meeting, a discussion item regarding the 40 year recertification building department process. Because of the unique conditions faced by Miami Beach high-rises — seawater intrusion, sea-level rise and hurricanes — existing beachfront condos may need to be inspected more frequently than every 40 years. I am formally requesting a recommendation from the City Manager and Building Official. I would like City of Miami Beach to take the lead in being one of the first cities to address this issue. Other factors which may be considered and discussed besides the timing and frequency of the certifications include: discussion on expanding the scope of inspections; who may perform the inspections; and other criteria. In addition, I would like an update on the various ideas being presented at Miami-Dade County to address the certification process as well and all other County items related to the Surfside tragedy. Should the Commission wish to continue this dialogue at the Committee level this may be appropriate for either the Land Use or Neighborhoods Committee. Please feel free to contact Diana Fontani should you need any additional information. |
