The 500-700 Alton Road Park is set to open this fall. In preparation for its opening, the West Avenue Neighborhood Association Neighborhood Association (“WAvNA”) has met and has come up with name suggestions for the park as outlined below:
- Gateway Park or South Beach Gateway Park: refers to its location at the entrance to Miami Beach
- South Shore Park - to honor the South Shore Hospital that was the first AIDS clinic in the State of Florida
- Sunset Park – the park faces west towards the sunset
- Tequesta Park – an acknowledgement of the original inhabitants of the region, which is somewhat overdue and underrecognized
- West Avenue Park or West Bay Park - associates the park to a specific neighborhood next to the Bay
WAvNA has no specific recommendation at this time.
Additionally, during the January 10, 2019 Parks and Recreational Facilities Advisory Board (the “Board”) meeting, a motion was passed recommending that the new 500-700 Alton Road Park, at our City's primary entrance, be named “Unity Park.” (Exhibit B) This is inspired by the City’s culture of diversity and inclusiveness. From religious freedom, to LGBTQ rights, to honoring residents with special needs and embracing people from every ethnicity, the City is a beacon for inclusion. The Board also recommended that plaques with inspirational quotes be placed throughout the park commemorating our City's commitment to this core value.
