SUBJECT:	REFERRAL TO THE LAND USE AND SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS THE BUILDING DEPARTMENT'S CURRENT BUILDING ASSESSMENTS AND POTENTIAL POLICY CHANGES.

ANALYSIS

On June 24th 2021, Champlain Towers South collapsed - a tragedy that left many wondering how this could have happened and what could have been done to avoid it. On July 9, the Miami Beach Building Department issued its latest update and response to this collapse which included various actions that the department was taking to ensure that buildings in Miami Beach were being properly assessed in a timely manner (see attached).

This item asks the City Commission to review:

1. Status of building assessments

2. Potential policy implications
