| SUBJECT: | DISCUSSION REGARDING THE COMMITTEE FOR QUALITY EDUCATION MOTION #1 MADE ON MARCH 16 REGARDING SUPPORTING ALL EDUCATIONAL ENHANCEMENTS ON MIAMI BEACH FOR THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR |
|
| | | | | | | | HISTORY:
| The City of Miami Beach signed an Education Compact with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) in January 2008 to bring together each organization's collective resources for the greater benefit of both students and residents of Miami Beach. Miami Beach is home to six (6) public schools including Miami Beach South Pointe Elementary, Miami Beach Fienberg Fisher K-8, North Beach Elementary, Biscayne Beach Elementary, Miami Beach Nautilus Middle School and Miami Beach Senior High School.
Through the Education Compact, M-DCPS and the City of Miami Beach have worked to raise academic achievement, access, and opportunity for all Miami Beach youth residents. The City's Strategic Plan also includes the outcome to Achieve K-12 Educational Excellence. Building on existing programs and many innovative ideas, the City of Miami Beach has developed and funded educational enhancements that support educational opportunities for the entire community.
The Compact was developed with significant community input and reflects the desire of the Miami Beach community to support excellence in their schools and invest in the overall enhancement of education for its residents. The areas of focus in this collaboration include, but are not limited to the following: teacher recruitment and retention; enhanced communication of educational and community events; family/parental involvement in education; community/business engagement, enhanced student health and well-being; improved student achievement; school safety; and technology access. The City expanded the areas of focus to include Prekindergarten access in 2016. |

| | | | | | | | CONCLUSION:
| The adoption of the Education Compact between the City of Miami Beach and M-DCPS established a pact to continually strive to promote excellence and relevance in education in the City's public schools and community at large by joining forces and creating partnerships for the greater benefit of both the students and the residents of Miami Beach. The educational enhancements currently underway each provide access and opportunities for Miami Beach youth which would not be available if it were not for the development of programs, innovation and funding of the City of Miami Beach. |
