COMMITTEE MEMORANDUM

TO: Neighborhood and Quality of Life Committee Members

FROM:
Alina T. Hudak, City Manager

DATE: April 28, 2021

SUBJECT:DISCUSSION REGARDING CREATING AN OUTDOORS BACKDROP FOR MARRIAGE CEREMONIES AND PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES.

HISTORY:

Accepting the recommendation of the LGTBQ Advisory Committee at its January 12, 2021 meeting to refer to the Neighborhood and Quality of Life Committee a discussion on creating an outdoors backdrop for marriage ceremonies and photo opportunities.

A structure to function as the backdrop for outdoor ceremonies and photo opportunities.  Suggested structure idea is 2 interlocked circles which symbolize both the couple’s rings and eternity. Foliage could be grown to bring the structure to life, similar to the structure in Soundscape Park.

ANALYSIS

The Administration conducted due diligence and conferred with the Parks and Recreation, Property Management and Art in Public Places departments along with the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens for guidance.

Staff identified the LGTBQ pavers on Ocean Drive as an ideal location and existing structure to where conduct ceremonies.

Also, the City of Miami Beach continues to be a leading popular destination for ceremonies. Locations such as our beaches, parks and Miami Beach Botanical Gardens all serve as existing backdrops for marriage ceremonies.

CONCLUSION:

The Administration seeks direction on how to proceed on with the creation of a structure s it would include the following:

1. Identify a funding source

2. Call to Artists from Art in Public Places

3. Historic Preservation Board review

4. Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee for recommendation to Commission

5. Commission approval
