DATE: April 28, 2021

SUBJECT:DISCUSSION REGARDING CREATING A  BEACH WALK ART EXHIBIT.

HISTORY:

On the January 13th, 2021 Commission Meeting, the Administration was directed to develop an art exhibition similar to the one currently found at the Bal Harbor beach walk in collaboration with The Bass and/or Art in Public Places. The item was referred to the March 22, 2021 Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee for review.

ANALYSIS

Currently, there is an art exhibition on the beach walk boardwalk in collaboration with The Bass, titled Art Outside.

With works ranging from monumental sculpture, neon, to sound and video, and participatory artworks, Art Outside is a public art exhibition initiated by The Bass that offers residents and visitors the opportunity to see and experience a network of public artworks throughout Miami Beach. In light of the socially distant world born from the COVID-19 pandemic, Art Outside takes the form of a curated parcours, expanding beyond The Bass’ Collins Park campus to multiple partner sites throughout the city.

Installed in Collins Park and around The Bass, artworks include permanent and temporary works from The Bass’ collection by Ugo Rondinone, Jim Drain, Sylvie Fleury, Lawrence Weiner, and Susan Philipsz, a temporary commission by Miami-based artist Karen Rifas, as well as artworks from the collections of the City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places, Miami Beach Urban Studios FIU, The Wolfsonian-Florida International University and the W South Beach.

There are currently 9 easels providing for 18 images and no other possible clearance for any additional ones from 16 street through 22 street from Collins Park to the beach walk.

COST

The works on the boardwalk average around $1,077 each. (Not including artist fee)

The below was the quote The Bass provided for 11 installs:

General Supplies $200

Labor (install- deinstall) $4,500

Printing (22) $2,855

Shipping $100

Maintenance (cleaning + reprinting) $1,260
