COMMITTEE MEMORANDUM

TO: Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee Members

FROM:
Raul J. Aguila, Interim City Manager

DATE: March 26, 2021

SUBJECT:DISCUSSION OF A CITY OF MIAMI BEACH GRANT OF $25,000 TO CLEAN MIAMI BEACH AND/OR OTHER POTENTIAL GRANTS OR SOURCES OF FUNDING

HISTORY:

This item was referred to the Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee (FERC) at the February 10, 2021 City Commission meeting by Commissioner Meiner.  The purpose of the referral was to discuss a City of Miami Beach Grant of $25,000 to Clean Miami Beach and/or other potential grants or sources of funding.

ANALYSIS:

Clean Miami Beach

Clean Miami Beach is a registered 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization committed to the betterment and cleanliness of Miami Beach and areas along its waterways. Clean Miami Beach is requesting the City to grant approximately $25,000 to support its operational costs.

The mission of Clean Miami Beach is to keep the Miami Beach community and natural habitats free of garbage and other harmful land pollutants with a focus on single-use plastics. Single-use plastics such as grocery bags, food packaging, bottles, straws, containers, cups, and utensils are extremely damaging to the unique fragile ecosystem of Miami Beach and its marine wildlife.

The organization’s goal is to provide a clean place for residents and visitors, and a safe environment where wildlife can thrive. Clean Miami Beach achieves this by mobilizing the community for weekly beach and wetlands clean ups, working with and advising local businesses to promote sustainable business practices, educating and spreading awareness about the negative impact of single-use plastics on our ecology and proposing and supporting local ordinances drawn to protect the natural habitat of marine wildlife

Citywide Grants

Grants and Contributions that are related to the City’s overall operations and are not readily identifiable to any specific department are provided through the Citywide Accounts category of budgeted expenditures.  If funding is approved through the Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee and subsequently through Commission action, then a Citywide grant will be awarded to Clean Miami Beach for operations, commencing October 1, 2021.
